For any and all interested in pushing hands at this year’s event several teachers will be offering workshops per usual but, in addition to these, we’re adding a designated space where the curious and the experienced can find partners to work with throughout the day. This isn’t so different than previous years – people always paired up to practice – but the intent this year is to invite more people to participate in an environment created to assist novices and the experienced alike achieve their goals, whatever they may be. Attending push hands workshops are always recommended but if afterward someone wants to explore further what they just learned, this area and a revolving roster of experienced teachers on hand is there to fill that need.
Not everyone comes to Taijiquan through its martial gate. Arguably its benefits to overall health and wellness is what makes it valuable in the modern era. The practice of forms and qigong has helped millions worldwide and certainly that’s enough. Its practice as a martial art is less popular in the modern era. However, if you’re willing to explore the ‘quan’ of Taiji – its gongfu – you will find ways to deepen your understanding of your solo practice.
For beginners the practice is very cooperative, partners actively helping each other to fix errors and develop an understanding of the exercise’s principles and goals, while more experienced attendees can test each others skills more freely. It’s an opportunity for everyone to cross-train with all skill levels to help raise everyone’s understanding and ability in a safe environment. Bring all your enthusiasm and leave your ego at the door. Connect with a human being and have fun.
